Imagine a place where the wild beauty of nature is not only seen but felt in every moment. Churchill, Manitoba, known as the "Polar Bear Capital of the World," offers this and so much more. Here are seven compelling reasons why a wilderness safari in Churchill should top your dream travel list.

1. Witness the Majestic Polar Bears Up Close

Churchill is renowned for its polar bear population, and there's no better place on earth to see these incredible creatures in their natural habitat. Every autumn, polar bears gather along the Hudson Bay waiting for the sea ice to form, providing a unique opportunity for visitors to observe them.

For the ultimate polar bear experience, consider the “Hudson Bay Odyssey”, a trip that promises intimate encounters with these magnificent animals. You'll stay at the remote Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge guided excursions bring you right into the heart of bear territory.

2. Encounter Beluga Whales

The Churchill River estuary is home to one of the largest populations of beluga whales. During the summer, thousands of belugas migrate to these warm waters, creating an unparalleled opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts. You can kayak, snorkel, or take a boat tour to get an up-close view of these playful creatures.

The Ultimate Arctic Summer Adventure combines polar bear sightings with beluga whale encounters, ensuring an unforgettable adventure that highlights the best of Churchill’s wildlife.

3. Explore the Northern Lights

Churchill’s location beneath the auroral oval makes it one of the best places in the world to witness the Northern Lights. From August to early April, the night sky often comes alive with dazzling displays of green, pink, and purple lights dancing overhead.

This package not only offers the unique opportunity to embark on a thrilling tundra tour to spot majestic polar bears in their natural habitat and enjoy an exhilarating dog sledding experience but also provides comfortable accommodations and excellent vantage points for observing this natural wonder at the Lazy Bear Lodge, one of the prime spots for aurora viewing.

4. Discover Unique Arctic Wildlife

Beyond polar bears and belugas, Churchill’s wilderness is teeming with diverse wildlife. Bird watchers can revel in the variety of species that migrate through this region, including snowy owls and gyrfalcons. You might also spot arctic foxes, caribou, and even the elusive wolverine.

For a well-rounded wildlife experience, the “Birds, Bears, and Belugas Safari” offers an itinerary packed with opportunities to see all of these incredible animals, guided by experts who know where and when to find them.

5. Immerse Yourself in the Rich History and Culture

Churchill is steeped in history and culture, from its Indigenous heritage to its role in Arctic exploration. Visit the Prince of Wales Fort, a historic Hudson's Bay Company outpost, and learn about the area's significance in the fur trade. Engage with local Indigenous communities to gain insight into their traditions and way of life.

A visit to the Itsanitaq Museum provides a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural heritage, showcasing artifacts that date back thousands of years.

6. Experience the Raw Beauty of the Tundra

The subarctic tundra around Churchill is a landscape like no other. Vast, open spaces dotted with wildflowers in the summer and blanketed in snow during the winter create a serene and starkly beautiful environment. Would like information on the Churchill polar bear trips.

Linda Haines,06/22/2024

Im interested in planning a trip for the week of thanksgiving 2025. It would be for 4 people and we would like to ride the train from winnipeg to churchill. Spend a couple of days in churchill and see the polar bears and do a polar bear excursion. We would like to be away from the crowds for our accomodations and then we would like to fly home. We would be flying into winnipeg to board the train. Please advise on an itinerary and aproximate costs. Thank you so much. We would need 2 sleeping cars ( one with private bathroom and one with a shared bathroom. )
